Rational of the Local School Board<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Local School Boards have been established in government schools at both the primary and secondary levels by the Ministry of Education. This initiative take by the Ministry of Education was seen as an instrumental move towards School-based Management and decentralization. School-Based Management has been identified as an important factor that results in improved levels of student achievement and school enrichment. Due to decentralization, authority would be given to all stakeholders giving them an opportunity to be part of the decision-making process for improved quality, efficiency and effectiveness at schools.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Role of the Local School Board<\/h2>\n

The role of the Local School Board within the school would be:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • To complement and support the strategic plan and policies of the Ministry of Education and the school.<\/li>\n
  • To contribute to school development and school improvement plans and assist, where possible, in th implementation of those plans.<\/li>\n
  • To act as policy advisers to support the initiatives of school-based management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Duties of the Local School Board<\/h2>\n

    The duties and powwers of the Board would fall within three major categories:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Strategic Planning.<\/li>\n
    • Building community relationships.<\/li>\n
    • Maintenance and upgrade of school’s physical facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The full duties and powers of the board can be found in the Education (Local School Boards) Regulations, 2005.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      Composition of a Local School Board.<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      The term of a board constitued by order is 2 years.<\/p>\n

      By legal notice in accord with the Education ( Local School Board) regulations 2000, a Board constitued by Order made under Section 23 of the Act shall comprise the following persons appointed by the Minister:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • The Principal or person acting in the post for the time being.<\/li>\n
      • A practicing member of the school’s staff other than the Principal.<\/li>\n
      • A member of the Union most representative of teachers nominated by the Union who is a practicing member of the school’s staff.<\/li>\n
      • Two members of the majority Parent Teacher’s Organization functioning and existing in the school, nominated by the members of the Organization.<\/li>\n
      • A representative of the Past Pupils’ Associations, if any, of the school nominated by the association.<\/li>\n
      • A member of the student body who is dilligent, conscientious and an all-roud team player and is nominated by the Student Council of the school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
